All man older than 45 years should consult their doctors about the positive and negative aspects of prostate screening examinations. The following prostate cancer exams recommendations apply to two different age groups of men.
45 to 75
• Consult your doctor about the procedure.
• PSA test is a blood test used primarily to screen for prostate cancer.
• Digital rectal exam will be performed if you choose to get screened.
Older than 75
• Your doctor will help you decide if you should continue the examination for prostate cancer or not.
• Only a doctor can make the decision regarding men over the age of 80 being screened.
Exams for men in the increased risk group.
The danger to get prostate cancer is higher for a man who is in the increased risk group. This doesn’t mean you’ll get cancer. But you may need to start screening examinations at an earlier age or be tested more often.
If you have any of these conditions below, you are in a high-risk group:
• Family history (especially if it is your father, brother or son) of prostate cancer
• Being an African-American
Follow the steps below if you’re at increased risk:
At 40
• Consult a doctor about the procedures.
• PSA test and digital rectal exam
Aside from taking regular exams, please train your body awareness. This means that you should learn more about the individual features of your own body. You should notice changes, like irregular urination. In such cases please immediately inform the doctor about the problem.
Examinations for men who’ve had prostate cancer.
If you have had prostate cancer, you need a different plan for verifying the recurrence of cancer.
